The male genital skeleton is described and compared in Condylostylus helioi Milward de Azevedo, 1976, a species of the group caudatus, C. chrysoprasi (Walker, 1849), a species of the group chrysoprasi and C. flagellatus Becker, 1922, a species of the group flagellatus, based on 39, 24 and 8 specimens, respectively. The diferent characteristics were analysed intraspecifically in the three species studied, correlated interspecifically and compared to the groundplan of the family Dolichopodidae developed by ULRICH (1974 and 1976). The condition of plesiomorphy or apomorphy is indicated for each characteristic. It was observed that although the three species showed symplesiomorphic caracteristics in relation the genus Condylostylus, they form well characterized groups on the male genital skeleton. The disposition of the genitalia in the imago male 74 of Condylostylus helioi is due to the clockwise 360° movement of the hypopygium in relation to the longitudinal axis and the pre-abdominal segments, and the movement of deflection which follows. The primary rotation of 180° in relation to the longitudinal axis in a clockwise direction, between the 7th abdominal segment and subsequent segments is pantly responsible for the dorso-lateral-sinistral position of the 8th sternite. This sternite completes the 180° movement in relation to the pre-abdominal segments after the secondary rotation, which may explain the asymetry observed in the 8th sternite. Of the three species of Condylostylus which were examined, only C. helioi possesses genitalia and 8th sternite telescoped into the seventh segment, and this disposition is probably responsible for the reduction of the 7th sternite, a condition observed in the other species of the group caudatus. A study of the hypopygium circumversum condition was supllemented by the study of the disposition of the genital system in relation to the last section of the alimentary tube, both systems diretly envolved in rotation. These studies were carried out in Condylostylus ornaticauda Van Duzee, 1931, a species of the group caudatus and demonstred the movement of the ductus ejaculatorius around the rectum proper. The rotatinal movement of the last abdominal 75 segments in Condylostylus chrysoprasi and C. flagellatus represents a plesiomorphic condition in relation to the groundplan of the Dolichopodidae. The genitalia of these two species undergo a rotation of 180° in relation to the pre-abdominal segments. After this movement a torsion occurs connecting the 8th sternite dextrally with the aedegus in the cranial direction and the anus caudally, returning then to the dextral-sinistral position before the rotation. The deflectory movement which follows, creates a slight inclination of the genitalia under the abdomen.eng
