In the period between August, 1989 and January, 1992, 22 especimens of Amazonetta brasiliensis and 18 of Anas bahamensis were necropsied, for the study of the helminth fauna. The lagoon of Maricá, lagoon of Guarapina, mouth of the Mombuca river and the seasonal mudflat of Maricá ("restinga"), were used as collecting areas at Maricá County, State of Rio de Janeiro. Every bird necropsied was infected with at least one species of helminth, ranging from one to six species per host. A total of fourteen helminths species were collected, 13 from Amazonetta brasiliensis and 5 from Anas bahamensis, totaling 1134 specimens. The most prevalent species, collected from Amazonetta brasiliensis, was the cestode Cloacotaenia megalops, which showed a significantly higher prevalence in the female hosts. Anas bahamensis had two species with high prevalences, Psilochasmus oxyurus and Fimbriaria fasciolaris, but showed no significant difference between male and female hosts. Ten new host records, the recording of two natural hosts, two new helminth records for the Neotropical region and two new helminth records for Brasil, suggests the possibility that migratory birds may have introduced these helminth species in the study area. The diet of the anatids was analysed qualitatively, by dividing the components in six groups, which made possible a discussion upon the supposed intermediate hosts of the collected helminth species. The helminth community structure was analysed through the spacial pattern, richness and diversity of species, which showed that the richest and more diverse helminth community, was that of Amazonetta brasiliensis and among the collecting areas was the lagoon of Maricá, Maricá, RJ. Species of veterinary importance, with an epizootic potential, were collected from Amazonetta brasiliensis, with low prevalence and intensity of infection, suggesting that, this host may be maintaining these helminth species in its natural habitat.eng
