Other | The intensification of conventional farming practices such as high input uses for fertilization and liming, and intensive soil tillage, generate edge effects on nearby forest fragments as changes in soil fertility with possible negative effects on the tree community. The objective of this work was to evaluate changes in the fertility of soils from forest remnants adjacent to agricultural areas with intensive use, and to agricultural areas of extensive use, with low intensity of use, and to verify the impacts caused in the tree community of these fragments. The study was carried out in the Guapi-Macacu River Basin in the state of Rio de Janeiro in 14 forest fragments scattered throughout the basin, 7 which were covered by livestock (EU) and 7 by agriculture (IU). Soil samples were collected, subjected to granulometric and chemical analysis to estimate fertility levels. Data of slope, orientation and opening of the fragments canopy were collected. We also calculated the landscape metrics of size, perimeter-area ratio, isolation and amount of agricultural boundary. Through these data, we tested generalized linear models to identify which variables explain soil fertility levels and the abundance and richness of pioneer and late species of the forest fragments with an intensive and extensive agriculture environment. The Kruskal-Wallis test was also used to verify differences in fertility levels between fragments with IU and EU environment. Fertility levels showed a tendency for higher values in IU fragments, indicating strong evidence that agricultural practices in the environment cause aerial deposition of nutrients, causing nutritional enrichment in fragments close to IU areas. The limit with agriculture has a direct influence on species abundance, benefiting helióphilous species to the detriment of esciphilous species. The abundance and richness of the pioneer species are clearly benefited by increasing calcium levels, while the late species are strongly impacted by increasing phosphorus levels, results indicate a trend of dominance of more initial succession species in nutritionally enriched soils. Thus, the study shows that the intense adoption of inputs in cultivated areas causes impacts that gain the breadth of the landscape scale, not only in the productive area itself. Finally, it is necessary to discuss the harms caused by the intensification of agriculture and the need for strategies that combine agricultural production and conservation of natural remnants | eng |
