Other | The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a collar impregnated with flumethrin (2.5%) and propoxur (10%) against adults of Ctenocephalides felis felis and Rhipicephalus sanguineus on Beagle dogs, and to evaluate possible changes in serum cholinesterase (butyrylcholinesterase) after the use of the collar. Twenty Beagle dogs were divided into two groups, on 10 animals impregnated collars were placed and the other 10 remained untreated (control group). Each dog was infested with 50 pairs of C. felis felis and 25 pairs of R. sanguineus weekly during the first month, and after the second month every two weeks until day +210. Forty-eight hours after infestation, live fleas and ticks were recovered and counted from the animals. For determination of serum cholinesterase, blood samples were collected on days -14, -7, +1, +5, +10, +30, +45, +60, +75, +90, +105, +120, +135, +150, +165, +180, +195 and +210. All animals were evaluated weekly for signs consistent with clinical intoxication. At the end of the trial, the collars were removed, and after seven days, new measurement of cholinesterase was done. . The efficacy for C. felis felis was over 80% for up to day +168 after treatment. The efficacy for R. sanguineus was over 80% up to day +182. It was found that the collar has not decreased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) serum butyrylcholinesterase in dogs by comparing the means before and after treatment, however, the serum cholinesterase activity was significantly increased (p ≤ 0.05) after removal of the collars. It was evident that the impregnated with propoxur and flumethrin has an efficacy superior to five months in the control of C. felis felis and R. sanguineus. The alteration in serum cholinesterase levels by propoxur was not relevant and no signs of toxicity were observed during the experimental period | eng |
