A total of 796 specimens of fishes of 19 families, 28 genera and 32 species, collected in the Rio da Guarda watershed, were necropsied and examined for endohelminths. Salinity was used to establish three collecting stations: NR- headwaters; CR- central portion of the river; FR- river mouth. The fishes were classified in five ecological cathegories: lA- fishes strictly of freshwater; IB-freshwater fishes facultative invaders of low salinity waters; 2Aanadrom fishes; 2B- marine fishes invading freshwaters; 2Cmarine fishes facultative invaders of moderate to low salinity waters. The fish fauna was found to be formed by species of freshwater origin in the headwaters, freshwater and marine species in the main body of the river and marine euryhaline species in the mouth of the river. The fauna of endohelminths found, although composed of species of freshwater and marine origin proved to be of xviii little diversity, and the helminths showed low prevalence. The number of species from freshwater and marine environments was almost the same, 11 and 12, respectively. The freshwater fauna of parasites was basically composed of nematodes, and the marine, basically of digenetic trematodes. The other two taxa, Cestoda and Acanthocephala contributed with a low number of species. Among the 23 species identified, it was described a new species of the genus Hysterolecitha. Hymenocotoides manteri, Dicrogaster fastigatus and Schikoballotrema elongatum were recorded for the first time in Brasil. The low number of species of digenetic trematodes of freshwater origin was associated to the reduction of the mollusc fauna, intermediate hosts, due to the low concentration of calcium carbonate. The large quantity of domestic sewage and industrial wastes, throughout the watershed, the salinity variation at the mouth of the river, and the small number of individuals of some species of fishes, are some of the main factors responsible for the results obtained. Little variation was observed in the intensity of infection by the endohelminths of the fishes collected in the different stations separated by the salinity concentrations. These results confirm that the endohelminths, less influenced by the macro-environment, are not good indicators of the abiotic factors.por
