The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness against the flea Ctenocephalides felis felis and the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus, and also verify the clinical safety of organophosphate coumaphos in the commercial formulation in the form of presentation of parasiticide soap for dogs. Were used 16 Beagles dogs, kept in the Laboratory of Experimental Chemotherapy in Veterinary Parasitology (LQEPV), Department of Animal Parasitology, Veterinary Institute, University Federal Rural of Rio de Janeiro. Specimens of C. f. felis and R. sanguineus used in artificial infestations were derived from colonies maintained in LQEPV. Pulicide efficiencies in day +2 to +7, were respectively 100% and 63.11%, while the efficiencies acaricides were respectively 99.62% and 43.25%. The coumaphos presented good efficacy against fleas and ticks within 48 hours of use, however, there was no good residual efficacy after re-infestation. In relation to clinical safety, hematology tests were performed (complete hemogram) and biochemical (ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, GGT, urea, creatinine, and serum cholinesterase) for evaluation of possible toxic effects from the use of the product. The animals showed no changes in clinical examination and laboratory tests that could be associated with adverse effects from the use of tested products, thus demonstrating that the coumaphos parasiticide in the formulation of soap is safety for use in dogs.eng
