Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) is a pathology that consists of changes in the behavior and learning related to pathological aging. CCD signals that usually appear from 8 years of age are: disorientation, decrease or changes in social-environmental interactions, changes in sleep-wake cycle, prejudice in toilet training and other routine activities, as well as increased anxiety. The increase in the life expectancy of dogs and consequently the highest incidence of the disease contributed for the search of new approaches to clinical and laboratory diagnosis as well as alternative treatments. This dissertation proposes acupuncture as a treatment for CCD, having its effect evaluated by scores obtained in diagnostic questionnaires and the dosage of enzymes butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), cholinesterases (ChE) and catalase. Canines with 8 or more years of age with symptoms that are compatible to the CCD from the State of Rio de Janeiro were evaluated clinically and their tutors answered two diagnostic questionnaires. These animals were submitted to blood collection for dosage of BChE, ChE and catalase enzymes and received treatment by acupuncture in these acupoints: Yintang, GV20, PC6, B23, S36 and K3 for 10 minutes once a week for four weeks. New blood collection and reapplication of the questionnaires were completed by the end of the treatment. In the analysis of the questionnaires, we found a significant reduction of the clinical signs of disease (p = 0.0001 in questionnaire 1 and p<0,0001 in the questionnaire 2). However, there was no significant change in the activity of the enzymes studied before and after treatment. The clinical improvement of the treated animals makes possible the use of acupuncture as one important tool in the treatment of CCD.eng
