Many factors can affect the serum levels of thyroid hormones (TH) and pituitary thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in dogs. In context, it is widely discussed the role of non-thyroid illness on the activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis and changes in thyroid function that occur during non-thyroid illness tests. The euthyroid sick syndrome is characterized by a decrease in serum T3 and T4 with normal or increased TSH in the absence of thyroid disease itself. The correlation of the levels of T4 and T3 with disease severity and outcome has been demonstrated, and the more severe the clinical status the more suppressive is the effect on TH. Thus, this study aimed to the evaluate the serum levels of total T4 total (T4t) T3 total (T3t) and TSH in dogs in the course of various diseases and the relationship between hormones and the clinical course. Fifty dogs with severe infectious, inflammatory and renal diseases were evaluated attended at the UFRRJ veterinary hospital, in veterinary clinics in Rio de Janeiro and at a dog shelter located in Rio de Janeiro. The most frequent change was a reduction in the total T3t (56 %). The T4t was decreased by 40.8% studied dogs. The values of T4t and T3t were reduced according to the clinical condition (fair, poor and very poor) and the reverse occurred with TSH. The dogs that died had lower serum levels of T3t and T4t and higher TSH than the animals that survived. In the animals that was possible to perform an analysis at discharge or review the values of T3t, T4t had a slight elevation and the reverse was observed for TSH. It is concluded that the non-thyroid illness may affect serum levels of T3t, T4t and these values, particularly the values of T4t can be used as prognostic indicators.eng
