A novel synthetic pyrethroid FMC 65318 was tested "in vitro" and "in vivo" on Boophilus microplus (Canestrini, 1887) in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. In "in vitro" studies using engorged females a IC 50 of 2,6 ppm was obtained demonstrating a high activity for the inhibition of egg-laying, as well as sterilization of the eggs. Unfed larvae showed a high sensibility to the pyrethroid, since a LC 50 of 0,052 ppm was observed. In stable experiments (critical trials) a good result was obtained with 40 ppm with a rapid decrease on the percentage of females surviving treatment from the second day post-treatment, reaching a reduction of 100% from the third day. Four field tests were performed with mixed cattle, naturally infected with B. microplus and manually sprayed with 5 litres of pyrethroid liquid in various concentrations. It was seen that, in controlled studies in the field, it is important to use on emulsifiable concentrate (EC) especially developed for each concentration, with a constant dilution, varying only the quantity of the active ingredient in xvi the emulsifiable concentrate. The efficacy of FMC 65318 at 50 ppm reached acumulative value of 99,5% from the 4th to the 24th day; the protective period varied from 7 to 11 days. It was also determined that FMC 65318 shows excellent activity against all the stages of B. microplus when compared camethrin, Flumethrin and Cyalothrin. The pyrethroid FMC 65318 possesses an excellent potential for use in the control of B. microplus although it is necessary to extend the observations made in field trials to includea larger number of animals and indifferent regions of Brazil.eng
