This research aims to analyze the theme of the origin of indigenous peoples and civilizations in the history of African American thought since the early 20th century. From the 1960s onwards, several Pan-African authors and supporters of Afrocentrism argued that African peoples had arrived in pre-Columbian America and stimulated the emergence and development of civilizations at different times in history. These theories achieved wide dissemination, mainly in the United States, after the publication of They came before Columbus by Ivan G. Van Sertima in 1976, and were also increasingly present in narratives of African American religious movements such as the Moorish Science Temple of America and the Nuwaubian Yamassee, among others. However, it is possible to verify the presence of the theme in African-American history, at least since the 1920s, from publications such as Wonderful Ethiopians of the Ancient Cushite Empire (1926) by Drusilla Dunjee Houston, 100 Amazing Facts about the Negro (1934) or the Circle Seven Koran (1927) by African American Islamic leader Noble Drew Ali. We will try to demonstrate that these theories are related to a broader context of black intellectual history in the United States, black nationalism and the ways in which human culture has been understood by the human sciences since the 19th century. We conclude that the concepts of civilization and culture that inspired the reaction of intellectuals and black nationalists since the 19th century continued to be present in many theories about the African presence in pre-Columbian America throughout the 20th century, and that this theme began to figure in the formation of diverse discourses on African American identity.en
