This thesis aims to investigate the relationship between whaling and commercial activity. First, it will be explored a Marxist analysis of the issue of common resources, in which whaling policies fall, and their commodification. Considering these two points as initial moments, this thesis focuses on the more than 1000 years of history of commercial whaling, noting that the logic of capital, even before the capitalist logic, already acted to overexploit whaling populations. Therefore, it will be presented an analysis to understand the ways and reasons of this result. By using historical sources, documents from international organizations and newspaper articles, the capital will be analyzed based on its four pillars: unlimited growth and accumulation, maintenance of consumption, rotation and development of productive forces or improvement of efficiency and technology. Then, this thesis will demonstrate how each operation throughout history destroyed cetacean populations. Finally, it will also analyze how the ideology of capital operated on whaling workers as they also contributed to the super- exploitative activity of whales.en
