| pt_BR |

| dc.description.abstractOther | Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is defined as a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by cognitive impairments, as well as hyperactive and impulsive behaviors, which can contribute to critical disruptions in adulthood. Pharmacological therapy has been shown to address the deleterious effects of ADHD; however, the side effects are significant. Based on this, recent studies have investigated the effects of non-pharmacological therapy on the disorder. The health benefits of aerobic exercise are well known; however, this model is timeconsuming and considered by many to be monotonous, making adherence difficult for neurodivergent individuals. On the other hand, studies addressing the effects of resistance training are scarce. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the possible influences induced by resistance training (RT), methylphenidate hydrochloride (MPH) and the combination of both, on ADHD-like behaviors in a female experimental model. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), considered by the literature to be the appropriate model for investigating the disorder, were assigned to the following experimental groups: Control (ADHD-SEDCTRL, n = 10), Resistance Training (ADHD-TRCTRL, n = 10), Drug (ADHDSEDMPH, n = 10), and Resistance Training + Drug (ADHD-TRMPH, n = 10). All animals were ovariectomized after three months of life. The experimental protocol consisted of 8 weeks of resistance training, in addition to the orogastric administration of methylphenidate hydrochloride, at a concentration of 0.2 mg/ml, only in animals belonging to the group treated with the drug, during the entire experimental period. After completion of strength training, the animals' behaviors were assessed through the sucrose preference, elevated plus maze, open field, Barnes maze, and passive avoidance tests. Statistical data were analyzed using Graphpad Prism software. The normality of data distribution was verified by the Shapiro-Wilk test. One, two-, and three-way ANOVAs were applied, and Tukey's post-test allowed for numerous comparisons. The results showed that resistance training, in addition to the combination of therapies, was able to reduce anxiety and impulsivity. However, only non-pharmacological therapy was effective in increasing locomotor activity (p<0.05), both behaviors assessed through the elevated plus maze and the open field. Another important effect resulting from resistance training and the combination of therapies was the increase in spatial memory, assessed through the Barnes maze (p<0.05). No significant difference was observed in the depression-like sign assessed through the sucrose preference test, nor were any significant differences identified in aversive memory assessed through the passive avoidance test (p>0.05). The results suggest possible benefits of resistance training and the combination of both therapies on ADHD-like signs. It is expected that the effects found, when translated, can generate behavioral improvements in individuals with ADHD. | en |
