| dc.description.abstract | As formigas (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) fornecem diversos serviços ecossistêmicos para o funcionamento e manutenção dos ambientes urbanos, sendo essenciais para o enriquecimento dos solos, reciclagem de materia orgânica e dispersão de sementes. Recentemente, diferentes estudos destacaram o papel das formigas na reciclagem de restos de alimentos humanos acumulados nas cidades, ressaltando a importância desses animais para a preservação de praças e parques urbanos. Diante desse cenário, esse estudo teve como objetivo investigar como a reciclagem de restos de alimentos humanos realizada por formigas é afetada sob diferentes condições ambientais e fatores locais. Para isso, dois estudos foram conduzidos em ambientes com históricos distintos para avaliar o serviço de remoção de restos de alimentos por formigas: I) no campus da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) em Seropédica (RJ), em ambientes com alta e baixa intervenção humana; e II) em praças e parques localizados na cidade do Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Em ambos os estudos, foram disponibilizados pedaços de salsicha e biscoito em estações de alimentos, e utilizado duas métricas de eficiência para avaliar o serviço: Tempo de descoberta (TD) e Tempo de remoção total (TRT). No experimento I, a espécie nativa Pheidole obscurithorax Naves, 1985 foi um fator chave para a alta eficiência na descoberta e remoção dos alimentos em áreas com alta intervenção humana. No experimento II, a presença da espécie invasora Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius, 1793) esteve positivamente associada com o maior risco na descoberta e remoção dos restos de alimentos em praças e parques urbanos. Esses resultados destacam como as formigas, nativas ou exóticas, podem ser importantes para reciclagem de restos de alimentos e que a presença e dominância de determinadas espécies pode ser fundamental para a execução desse serviço | pt_BR |

| dc.description.abstractOther | Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) provide various ecosystem services for the functioning and maintenance of urban environments, being essential for soil enrichment, organic matter recycling, and seed dispersal. Recently, various studies have highlighted the role of ants in recycling human food waste accumulated in cities, emphasizing the importance of these animals for the preservation of urban squares and parks. Given this scenario, this study aimed to investigate how the recycling of human food waste by ants is affected under different environmental conditions and local factors. To this end, two studies were conducted in environments with distinct histories to evaluate the food-removal service provided by ants: I) on the campus of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) in Seropédica (RJ), in environments with high and low levels of human intervention; and II) in squares and parks located in the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ). In both studies, pieces of sausage and cookies were placed at food stations, and two efficiency metrics were used to evaluate the service: Discovery Time (DT) and Total Removal Time (TRT). In Experiment I, the native ant species Pheidole obscurithorax Naves, 1985 was a key factor in the high efficiency of food discovery and removal in areas with high human intervention. In Experiment II, the presence of the invasive species Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius, 1793) was positively associated with a higher risk in the discovery and removal of food scraps in urban squares and parks.
