| pt_BR |

| dc.description.abstractOther | Recurrent pyodermas in dogs diagnosed with atopic dermatitis pose a significant challenge, particularly due to the emergence of resistant bacterial strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP). This study aimed to identify resistant and multidrug-resistant bacterial strains in dogs presenting with secondary pyoderma associated with atopic dermatitis, treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore, it sought to correlate the presence of these pathogens with the animals’ history of antimicrobial usage. A total of 107 samples from dogs with atopic dermatitis and pyoderma were analyzed. For phenotypic and genotypic detection assays, only bacterial isolates identified as belonging to the genus Staphylococcus were considered. Phenotypic analyses included tests such as coagulase, catalase, specific biochemical assays, and disk diffusion antibiograms. Genotypic evaluations involved amplification of the 16S rRNA gene and detection of resistance specifically mediated by the mecA gene. In addition, species-level microbial identification was performed using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time- of-flight mass spectrometry, an advanced technique that allows rapid and highly accurate profiling of bacterial proteomic signatures. The results demonstrated that Staphylococcus pseudintermedius was the most prevalent species, accounting for 47.7% of isolates. Among Staphylococcus evaluated, 35.5% harbored the mecA gene, and 33% exhibited multidrug resistance to at least three classes of antibiotics. A significant correlation was observed between frequent antimicrobial administration particularly amoxicillin combined with clavulanic acid and cephalexin and the emergence of resistant strains. These findings underscore the critical importance of rational antibiotic use in veterinary practice to mitigate public health risks and limit zoonotic transmission of resistant bacteria. Educational initiatives targeting veterinary professionals are recommended to foster responsible antimicrobial use and promote greater awareness. | en |
