A field experiment was carried out to assess the N-contribution from three legume species used as green manure and from natural vegetation on maize (Zea mayz, L.) yield. Treatments were vegetative parts of crotalária (Crotalaria juncea L.), mucuna cinza (Mucuna sp.), soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), and weed plants, added to the soil as mulch, and crotalária and weed plants plowed into the soil. Legumes’ growth cycle and N supply capacity obtained through nitrogen fixation process, were evaluated. In field conditions, crotalária and mucuna contributed up to 95 kg N ha-1, meanwhile soybean, due to its poor development, did not bring a significant N amount in the green manure-maize system. The maize crop did not respond significantly to N addition as green manure or chemical fertilizer, but it is suggested that legumes could improve soil condition to obtain better yield responses in the long term. In other experiment, conducted at greenhouse, the contribution of aerial and subterranean parts of mucuna cinza (Mucuna sp.) and feijão de porco (Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC.), as N source to sorghum (Sorghum bicolor, (L.) Moench) plants was evaluated. A feeding foliar technique using ureia-15N labeled solution was used in order to quantify N contribution from subterranean parts. As a result, mucuna cinza showed a more uniform isotopic enrichment into the plant, but the technique showed to be appropriate to quantify N derived from those roots that remain in soil after sift the soil to separate root system. Nitrogen contribution from aerial and subterranean parts to sorghum plants was evaluated using 15N labeled vegetative material, finding out significant differences among the different plant parts evaluated. Aerial or subterranean plant parts caused negative effect on sorghum plants growth suggesting N immobilization, but it was demonstrate that legume roots including nodules released up to 40 % of N from these plant parts. This fact showed the importance to obtain an estimate of root systems to N contribution in transfer studies to subsequent cultures, as much on experiments involving green manure as on that, involving different crop rotation.en
