Platynosomum illiciens is a frequent trematodeosis of cats from the southeastern region of Brazil, although ante mortem diagnosis is rare. This parasitic disease may progress with inflammation, biliary obstruction or neoplasias. The coproparasitologic diagnosis is difficult because the eggs are heavy and therefore demand sedimentation methods to be detected, besides eggs elimination being intermittent and in low numbers. With that in mind, ursodesoxicolic acid was used to test if the number of eggs in the fecal samples would improve. Sixteen cats were randomly included in the study, with no restrictions related to sex, age or clinical conditions, although no animal was healthy. The cats were housed individually and their fecal samples were collected and examined through sedimentation and flotation, daily, for 10 days. At day 5, after the fecal sample collection, all cats received ursodesoxicolic acid (10 – 15 mg/kg) orally, in a single dose. After the last fecal sample collection the animals were submitted to euthanasia followed by necropsy to search for eggs in the gall bladder and for worms in the biliary ducts. Among the 16 cats, nine were found harboring worms in the liver (56,25%). Although the number of eggs in the fecal samples enhanced after the administration of ursodesoxicolic acid, it was not statistically significant. The most sensitive laboratory method was fecal sedimentation of serial samples.en
