| pt_BR |

| dc.description.abstractOther | The cowpea is a legume cultivated in various regions of the world. In Brazil, this crop is of socioeconomic importance to low-income families. This is because it is a low-cost nutritional alternative, often called “the poor man’s meat” for its high protein content in its seeds. A drought-tolerant legume well adapted to semiarid conditions. In this context, the objective of this study was to characterize the physiological responses and protein content of the seeds of four cowpea genotypes, considered water-stress tolerants: EPACE 10, BRS Sempre Verde, BRS Pingo-de-Ouro-1-2, and Paulistinha, in response to water stress; it was realized in a greenhouse at the Plant Science Department of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 genotypes × 9 samplings and 3 replicates. Water stress was imposed on the plants when at least 50% of them had developed their first flower bud. The following physiological variables were evaluated: leaf predawn water potential (Ψw), relative leaf water content (RWC), leaf area, shoot dry mass, protoplasmic tolerance, soluble protein content, free amino acids, soluble sugars, and leaf starch before stress, during stress, and during rehydration. At physiological maturity, grain yield components and grain protein content (GPC) lwere evaluated in plants that had been subjected to drought and those that had not. The genotypes exhibited different physiological responses to cope with the effects of water stress. The BRS Sempre Verde genotype showed better maintenance of water status (Ψw and RWC) than the other genotypes. Regarding protoplasmic tolerance, as indicated by the percentages of relative integrity (PIR, %) and damage (PD, %), there was no difference among the genotypes under drought conditions. As for leaf area (LA), the Paulistinha genotype had the highest value on the 10th day of drought and during rehydration. On the last day of drought, the BRS Sempre Verde genotype showed higher leaf levels of soluble proteins and starch, and lower levels of soluble sugars and free amino acids, compared to the other genotypes. During rehydration, BRS Sempre Verde exhibited higher soluble protein content, which is associated with higher RuBisCO levels and leaf photosynthetic activity. At maturity, all genotypes showed reduced yield components; however, under drought conditions, EPACE 10, Pingo-de-Ouro-1-2, and BRS Sempre Verde exhibited a higher number of pods, a similar number of seeds, and a similar or higher seed mass per plant compared to Paulistinha. Regarding grain protein content (GPC), Paulistinha and EPACE 10 stood out for their greater capacity to accumulate protein under stress; BRS Sempre Verde, on the other hand, exhibited higher GPC under irrigated conditions. Thus, the BRS Sempre Verde genotype stood out for exhibiting physiological characteristics associated with drought tolerance, including higher values of Ψw, soluble proteins, and starch compared to the other genotypes, demonstrating potential for use in breeding programs. However, from a yield perspective, the EPACE 10, Pingo-de-Ouro-1-2, and BRS Sempre Verde genotypes did not differ in grain yield and are equally recommended for agricultural use. | en |
