Abstract: The present work has as its main objective to reflect on the relationship between the gamification of the spectacle-sport and the Europeanization of Brazilian football. In the wake of the process of globalization and spectacularization of football—driven in benefit of and in the interest of European teams—a symbolic dispute surfaces, placing face to face two types of discourses. Broadly speaking, they are: (i) on one side, struggling with the impotence regarding the balance of power in the current conjuncture—marked by intense and uninterrupted communication between cultures from all corners of the planet, enabled by the technological information revolution—are the narratives that associate Europeanization with modernization, emphasizing the gains brought about by the globalization and liberalization of the football market, relativizing the existence of national football schools, and condoning the formation of fan communities structured around deterritorialized relationships between supporters and clubs; (ii) on the other side, the accounts that reject modernization and its consequences as a threat to the true identity of Brazilian football, in which the emphasis often falls on the “advantages of backwardness,” perceptible both in arguments that condemn as illegitimate the ties of Brazilians with foreign teams—associating them with the lack of moral fiber characteristic of glory hunters, for whom success on the pitch and the glamour of European stars and championships are more important and seductive than loyalty to one’s roots—and in the claims that connect football-as-art with the Brazilian way—“the peculiar national way of getting rid of problems, or falsifying them,” in such a manner that these problems are not seen as obstacles to be overcome but, ultimately, as fundamental conditions for the maintenance and reproduction of the cultural and material foundations of the Brazilian football school. These discursive formations are the raw material of the investigation undertaken here. Thus, based on the critical examination of these discourses, the aim is to discern within these worldviews what is ideological and what is utopian in the representations and solutions each proposes to confront the challenges posed by the excessive communication between increasingly connected societies and cultures. To carry out this investigation, a dialectical interpretation is proposed of the discourses of different actors and agencies regarding the intricacies of the processes of cultural identity formation in football, taking as interlocutors intellectuals, journalists, managers, coaches, players, supporters, etc. Occupying a special place in the analysis of discourses on spectacle-football, electronic games are often at the center of the debates—at times being presented as pivots of modernization, at other times as promoters of acculturation. In any case, electronic games are, themselves, discursive formations. Taking this into account, it is assumed here that electronic games are a type of text that possesses a narrative structure and a preferential meaning, as well as an unconscious. In this direction, the task is to explore the contradictions inherent to the worldviews in question regarding how they interpret the transformations and prospects of football in Brazil and around the world in the face of the gamification of the spectacle-sport. Indeed, it is held that the primary task of the critical analysis of the discursive formations at hand is, before and above all, to shed light on their utopian dimensions. The central hypothesis of this work is that these utopian dimensions emerge as symptoms of the clash of narratives “which are at once distinct, simultaneous, and antagonistic.” It is, then, in the form of a symptom—insinuating itself through the gaps in the symbolic order—that the real reveals itself. From this, it follows that only a symptomatic reading of the scenario under scrutiny is capable of identifying the utopian and ideological dimensions inherent to both worldviews.
