| Abstract: | The Guapi-Macacu watershed holds great ecological, landscape, and hydrological relevance in the state of Rio de Janeiro, as it encompasses important remnants of the Atlantic Forest and plays a strategic role in maintaining the region's water availability. At the same time, it is an area historically marked by intense transformations in land use and land cover, with the expansion of agricultural activities, anthropic occupations, and forest fragmentation processes that have altered the landscape structure and influenced the dynamics of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the forest fragmentation of the Guapi Macacu river basin in the years 1985 and 2024 using landscape metrics, with the purpose of evaluating whether the changes in forest cover resulted in improvements in the configuration of the fragments and landscape connectivity. To achieve this, geospatial data on land use and land cover were processed using the QuantumGIS (QGIS) software version 3.44.9 Solothurn and analyzed through metrics in the Fragstats 4.2 software, which allowed for the characterization of the landscape structure at both the river basin and sub-basin scales. The analysis also considered the distribution of forest cover across different fragment size classes and within permanent preservation areas (APPs), in order to understand not only the amount of remaining forest but also its spatial organization and its relationship with legally protected areas. The results indicated an increase in forest cover over the studied period; however, this advancement was associated with an intensification of fragmentation, featuring a growth in the number of very small fragments, isolation and expansion of large fragments, and a reduction in connectivity among the remnants. The sub-basin analysis evidenced important differences between the sectors of the Guapi-Macacu. The gains in forest cover did not occur homogeneously, nor did they prioritize legally protected areas in all cases. In particular, it was observed that the Guapiaçu sub-basin presented more evident limitations regarding the restoration of legal protected areas, especially in hilltop areas. It is concluded that the increase in forest cover did not reflect a decrease in fragmentation or an increase in connectivity. Furthermore, landscape metrics proved to be effective tools for understanding the dynamics of forest fragmentation in the basin, contributing to the environmental diagnosis. The results offers relevant insights for decision-making, especially in planning conservation, restoration, and territorial management actions aimed at protecting the region's natural resources. |
