Abstract: This study took place in areas of Yellow-Red Podzolic, soil class that predominate in the region, located at the olden Pinheiros farm, municipality of Pinheiral, Rio de Janeiro State. The objective was to determine the efficiency of soil properties and of the soil fauna to assess the productive potential and degradation level of lands, in order to contribute to a sustainable agricultural management system. The studied areas are under cultivation with crops (Agri), pasture (PF), and native grass (PN), and with native secondary forest (FN) and eucalyptus forest (FE). For each land usage, sampling plots were selected in four different positions of the landscape: summit, shoulder, backslope, and footslope. Soil samples were taken in April 1997, at different soil depths, to measure variations in the physical and chemical properties, biomass, and in soil fauna as a function of land coverage and landscape position. The carbon of microbial biomass (CBM) varied slightly with depth (highest in the 0-5 cm layer) and landscape position. As for the land coverage, the CBM was highest in the PN (443.4 mg kg-1) and lowest in the FE (188.0 mg kg-1). The animal density in the soil fauna ranged from 420 ind m-2 in the PN area, to 154 ind m-2 in the FE, and 121 ind m-2 in the Agri area. As for the animal diversity (richness), the highest numbers (17 groups of animals) were found in the PN and PF areas, followed by the FE, and the lowest (10 groups) in the Agri area. The soil texture showed the predominance of sandy loam and sandy clay loam classes, in the depth of 0-20 cm, and sandy clay loam and clay loamy, in the 20-40 cm layer. The bulk density, in all landscape positions, was lowest in the areas under FS (0.92 to 1.06 kg dm-3) and highest in the PF (1.32 to 1.40 kg dm-3) and FE areas (1.35 to 1.42 kg dm-3). As a consequence, the total porosity was highest in FS (58 to 64 cm3 cm-3) and lowest in the areas under PF (42 to 49 cm3 cm-3) and FE (44 to 45 cm3 cm-3). In general, the weighed average diameter of aggregates (DMP) was highest in the FS (4.22 to 5.80 mm) and lowest in the PN (3.50 to 4.25 mm) and Agri areas (2.41 to 3.70 mm). The areas under PF showed the lowest levels of aluminum (0.0 to 0.8 cmolc kg-1) and the highest of calcium (0.9 to 1.3 cmolc kg-1) and magnesium (0.8 to 1.7 cmolc kg-1). The contrary was observed in the areas under FE and FS. The pH, in most landscape positions, was lowest in the forest areas (FE and FS). The organic carbon content was significantly higher in the areas under FS (18.6 to 29.6 g kg-1) and PN (13.8 to 31.4 g kg-1), and lowest in the area under FE (6.6 to 16.7 g kg-1). Regarding the landscape position, differences in organic C were random and variable when compared within the land coverage types. In general, the levels of potassium were within the limits of the class medium (47 mg kg-1) and the content of available phosphorus in the class low (< 10 mg kg- 1 ), with small variations in the different land coverage and landscape positions. In the 0-5 and 5-10 cm layers, the S value decreased from the summit to the backslope position, and increased slightly in the footslope position. Comparing the land coverage, the highest sum of bases were found in the PF (2.2 to 3.7 cmolc kg-1) and the lowest in the FE (0.5 to 2.4 cmolc kg-1) and FS (0.6 to 1.3 cmolc kg-1). The base saturation was below 50%, decreasing with depth, and it was significantly highest in the areas under PF, and lowest in the areas under FE and FS, in all landscape positions. The modifications in the soil properties expressed the intensity of agricultural practices (liming and fertilizing), land cultivation, additions of organic carbon, and nutrient turnover; as a function of quantity and quality of organic residues added, mineralization rate and biological activity. The properties CBM, organic carbon content, sum of bases, bulk density, and total porosity, showed best the variations in the type of land coverage and the erosion and soil degradation processes.
