Abstract: Triatoma nitida Usinger, 1939 is a wild species occurring in Mexico and Central America. In order to ser up the length of its life cycle, its transmission potential and its resistance to starvation under laboratory conditions, the following parameters were observed: the incubation period, the interval between hatching, or moulting, and the first feeding; the number of blood meals and the time of development from egg to adult. The time - lapse before the bite, the length of feeding and the interval between the end of blood meal and defecation, as well as the site of feces laying were also analysed. Resistance to starvation was examined in another sample, made up of 180 insects. Average length of the egg incubation period was 18.2 days. The length of the pre-feeding "rest" after hatching, or moulting, was rising from the second instar to adult, although the first and the third instars have been similar(X=5.6 days). Time interval between the food source offering and the bite was less than four minutes in 60% of the analysed cases, except in the fifth instar, where only 38% of the insects took up feeding in less than five minutes. The blood - sucking period was long and rising until the fifth instar, decreasing in the adult phase and ranging from one minute to two and a half hours. 0nly 26% of the blood meals were followed by defecations in a lapse of 20 minutes, and from these, 31.4% were placed directly over the source, indicating a low transmission potential. A high number of blood meals was necessary to carry out the moulting process (the average ranged from 2.7 in the first instar to 10.1 among the adult insects). The average length of the life cycle (from hatching to death in adult phase) was of 897.5 days, one of the longest spans ever reported in the literature. The period of resistance to starvation was high. First and second instar nymphs could withstand about two months; the third instar insects, for more than three months and the fourth instar for about five months, therefore the most resistant ones. Fifth instar nymphs have endured food deprivation for about four months whereas adult insects withstood for two months.
