Abstract: This dissertation is the results of the critical analysis of the memories associated with Mariana Grajales Cuello, a black woman who became a symbol of the cuban woman and a protagonist in the political struggles for the island’s independence beginning in 1868. Popularly, Grajales is still recognized by her compatriots as the “Mother of the Homeland.” More specifically, the study of the Grajales case seeks to understand the processes involved in constructing the memory surrounding this figure, taking into account the disputes related to the formation of the cuban national memory pantheon in different contexts, such as the independence movement in the mid-nineteenth century and the Cuban Revolution in the mid-twentieth century. The theoretical framework draws on studies of the construction of collective memory and national identity, informed by reflections on intersectionality. The methodology encompasses a diverse set of sources, ranging from correspondence and biographical texts to monuments and symbols that represent the figure under study
