The sound sensitivity in dogs is an increasingly common condition, and it is associated with both, individual factors and increased exposure to risk factors inherent to the routine the dog experiences alongside human being lately. In order to investigate risk factors for the development of sound sensitivity to fireworks, one questionnaire was distributed to dog tutors. The profile of dogs that were afraid of sounds was: females, young, castrated, SRD, with origin of abandonment, rescue or donation. In general, behavioural disorders in dogs are poorly managed in Brazil. Also, it is possible that veterinarians' lack of access to education that covers behavioural disorders more fully interferes in the quality of the medical approach to these patients. In order to investigate the professionals' access to the topic of sound sensitivity in dogs during academic training, and the approach in these cases, another questionnaire was distribute to veterinarians, and it was observed that only 21% had contact with the subject on graduation. However, 96% of veterinarians understand it as relevant in veterinary medicine. Most of them reported being frequently asked by tutors on the subject, but only 20% feels safe to provide the proper guidance. Currently the clinical approaches to sensitivity, phobia and panic to fireworks sounds are composed of an association of behavioural therapy with sedative or anxiolytic pharmacological interventions. Resolution is difficult as it involves a large commitment from the tutor and the veterinarian to frequent adaptations in addition to the risks of drug side effects. In this sense, acupuncture may be an option for stress and anxiety control, especially for patients with drug restrictions. To verify the effectiveness of the technique for these cases, 19 dogs with sound sensitivity to fireworks underwent the acute sound stimulus model in the laboratory. Autonomic modulation (through cardiac interval variability) and behavioural activity were evaluated. The dogs were divided into two groups, control (no treatment) and acupuncture (Yintang, VG20, E36, Pc6, B52 and C7 points), treated for 8 weeks, and resubjected to the test at the end. The effect of acupuncture was not effective in decreasing autonomic and behavioural reactions in the laboratory, but according to tutors' evaluation, treated animals were more tolerant and showed less intense reactions to home sound events after treatment.eng
