Other | The goats are present into various regions, especially in severe weather environments, which exert strong selection pressure on animals. Changing animals from temperate and cold environments to hot and humid ones can cause morphological changes in the structures of the external coat of those animals. There are nowadays few analyses on changes that occur in the morphological characteristics of the hair coat and skin of goats from temperate and cold climates. In this work, the objectives were to characterize the structure of the external coat of dairy goats and to evaluate the effects of different breeds, ages and seasons on the characteristics of the skin and hair of these animals in a tropical environment. Another objective was evaluate if fine fibers can be recognized as an appearance of fine cashmere fiber in goats in Brazil and characterize them, because such fact is not yet reported in the literature. Exactly 129 animals were used, 68 of the Alpine breed, 49 of the Saanen breed, six crossbred (7/8 Alpine + 1/8 Boer) and four of the Boer breeding, belonging to the flock of the Federal University of Viçosa, Viçosa / MG and two Boer belonging to the flock of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica / RJ. The collections were made in the following seasons: spring 2013, summer and fall of 2014. We built a low cost digital reflectance meter for analysis of pigmentation of the skin and hair coat. A scanning electron microscope and a digital caliper were used for the characterization of the fiber and skin. The results had show that age, breed and season have an effect on the characteristics of the hair coat and skin. Saanen goats showed better characteristics for breeding in tropical environment. Through descriptive analysis it was observed that the average diameter of the fine fiber produced by cashmere goats Saanen, Alpine, 1/8 Alpine + 7/8 Boer, and Boer were, respectively, 11,06 μm, 11,15 μm, 11,38 μm and 8,75 μm. All those results presented lower mean diameter than the ones produced by specialized goat breeds in other countries. The frequency scales of cashmere produced by Saanen, Alpine, Alpine 7/8 + 1/8 Boer and Boer were respectively 7.52 / 100 μm, 7.42 / 100 μm, 6.62 / 100 μm and 6.60 /100 μm, and the thickness of the scales were 0,38 μm, 0,39 μm, and 0,42 μm 0,32 μm respectively. The descriptive analysis allowed the recognition of fine cashmere fiber in goats Saanen, Alpine, Alpine 7/8 + 1/8 Boer and Boer in a tropical environment. It was proposed that the genetic features are the most relevant ones to achieve those results, which has not been related to any other modification on the original features of these animals. | eng |
