| pt_BR |

| dc.description.abstractOther | The exam of the bone marrow is an important tool in the differential diagnosis of the diseases characterized by alteration in the peripheral blood. This paper aims to the hematological parameters study in sloths (Xenarthra: Bradipodidae) of the Bradypus variegatus species, deepening itself as to the knowledge about the origin of the blood cells to identify and to compare the bone marrow cells to the existing reports about the others animals species, besides establishing the bone marrow parameters of this same species of sloth. About the technical proceedings the principal goal were to establish the preliminaries methods of collecting, preparing, reading and interpretation of the bone marrow samples for achieve the standard of the bone marrow exam in this species. This study also aims to the reticulocytes mean values found in the peripheral blood of this species. Fifty-two animals of the Bradypus variegates species were used, however in this number were included the hematological values of thirty-one animals that were obtained from the dissertation of master degree of FERRER (1999), and others twenty-one animals having come from the Rio-Zoo Foundation and from “Chico Mendes” Park. Thirteen of the fifty-two animals were used for the studies of the values of reticulocytes in the peripheral blood and nine animals were used for evaluation and interpretation of the parameters of the bone marrow exam in this species. All the quantitative and the qualitative determinations in the blood samples analysis were established by conventional techniques in the clinical analysis laboratory of the Rio-Zoo Foundation, and for the myelogram evaluation have used the same conventional techniques as the same used in domestic mammals. The mean hematological values obtained for the Bradypus variegates are Red Blood Cell 3,13 x 106 /mm3 ; Hemoglobin 10,77 g/100ml; Packed Cell Volume 34,21 %; Mean Corpuscular Volume 112,73 fl; Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin 35,56 pg; Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration 31,55 %; White Blood Cell 7,01 x 103 /mm3 ; Basophils 0 %; Eosinophils 2,88 % (151,88 mm3 ); Band Neutrophils 4,06 % (296,19 mm3 ); Segmented Neutrophils 40,02 % (2826,13 mm3 ); Lymphocytes 49,60 % (3453,98 mm3 ); Monocyte 4,35 % (302,31 mm3 ). The mean value found for reticulocytes among males and females was 3,40%. The iliac crest is the best place to collect aspired material from the bone marrow. The best shading method useful for this species is the use of May-Grünwald- Giemsa (M.G.G.) pigment. The cell types and the morphology of the cells observed, during the cytological evaluation of the bone marrow are similar to mammal cells. The average results for the Myeloid cells (M), the Erythroid cells (E) and ratios M/E pertinent to males and females are 49,18%, 33,66 % and 2,00 respectively. In the statistical study done between males and females involving the hematological values didn’t show any significant difference between the averages of the variables studied (α= 0,05%). The statistical evaluation of the nine animals made between values of the Myeloid cells and the Erythroid cells didn’t show any significant difference between the averages of the variables studied (α= 0,05%). Yet, that is why, statistically, does not exist any difference between the quantity of the Myeloid cells and the Erythroid cells in the Bradypus variegates sloth. | en |
