| dc.description.abstract | Esta pesquisa se insere no debate entre realismo e antirrealismo acerca da ciência. O lugar clássico desse debate coloca, de um lado, o realista – defendendo que, para as teorias bem- sucedidas, os seus termos teóricos referem-se a entidades inobserváveis e que tais teorias são aproximadamente verdadeiras – e o instrumentalista – para quem inobserváveis não se referem a entidades existentes e as teorias bem-sucedidas não passam de instrumentos para o controle do objeto de interesse científico. Acusado de não explicar o sucesso da ciência, fazendo dele o fruto de um milagre, o instrumentalista precisa reconsiderar suas teses. Kyle Stanford, em Exceeding Our Grasp (2006), defende outra posição instrumentalista. Ele procura sustentar que não podemos fazer uso instrumental de uma teoria científica bem-sucedida sem acreditar em parte do que elas descrevem e que a possibilidade de acreditar em certas afirmações de tais teorias só ocorrem se puderem ser entendidas independentemente das teorias para a qual se adota uma atitude instrumentalista. Com isso, seu instrumentalismo epistêmico permite que as teorias façam afirmações sobre entidades inobserváveis e abre espaço para uma concepção instrumentalista do progresso científico. Entretanto, ao fazer concessões em favor de uma forma coerente de instrumentalismo, talvez Stanford não consiga diferenciar o compromisso instrumentalista do compromisso realista com a verdade aproximada dessas mesmas teorias. Nesse sentido, pretendo reconstruir o instrumentalismo de Stanford examinando em que medida sua posição não pode ser considerada uma forma moderada de realismo científico, isto é, uma forma de realismo científico seletivo. | pt_BR |

| dc.description.abstractOther | This research is part of the debate between realism and anti-realism in science. Classically, this debate contrasts the realist, who argues that the theoretical terms of successful theories refer to unobservable entities and that such theories are approximately true, with the instrumentalist, who claims that the unobservable does not refer to existing entities and that successful theories are merely instruments for controlling the object of scientific interest. Accused of not explaining the success of science and making it seem like the result of a miracle, the instrumentalist needs to reconsider his theses. Kyle Stanford has defended another instrumentalist position. He seeks to argue that we cannot make instrumental use of a successful scientific theory without believing in some of what it describes and that the possibility of believing in certain claims of such theories only occurs if they are understood independently of the theories for which an instrumentalist attitude is proposed. Thus, his epistemic instrumentalism allows claims about unobservable entities and an instrumentalist conception of scientific progress. However, by making concessions in favor of a constitutional form of instrumentalism, Stanford cannot differentiate the instrumentalist commitment from the realist commitment to the approximate truth of these theories. In this sense, I intend to reconstruct Stanford’s instrumentalism by examining to what extent his position cannot be considered a moderate form of scientific realism. | en |
