| Abstract: | The termites constitute a prominence problem, in the urban area and in the agroflorestal activity. The basic alimentary source ofthe termites is the celolusic materiais under different forms: wood lives or died (in different stages of decomposition), grassy, roots, seeds, feces of herbivores, humus, manufactured etc. Among the genus Rhinotermitidae, that happen in the southeast area of Brazil, the principal genus is Coptotermes and Heterotermes, which some species are pests. Coplotermes havilandi Holmgren is the main pest ofthe great urban and suburban centers and several species of Heterotermes happen in urban and rural areas. The family Termtidae is the richest in terms of number ofspecies. Though, the subfamily Nasutitermitinae has some species that attack woodwork of constructions in urban areas in Brazil. The genus Nasutitermes has world distribution and it is the richest in species. They can be very abundant in tropical forests and in savannas, little is known about the biology ofthe species. The degradation of the wood by insects or microorganisms is a fundamental stage in the cycling of nutrients of an ecosystem, by helping the balance among the diversity oflife in the nature. However, the biological agents that cause the degradation of the wood don't differ the wood material products whose degradation is important for the natural balance. So, it is necessary to protect from degradation the wood manufacture products. With this thought, the aimed of this work is to know the alimentary preference and the consumption of wood of the underground termites in field for sixty days. The experiment was accomplished in the municipal district of Seropedica, RJ (July to September, 2000). 240 stakes ofwood offour forest species (Eucalyptuspellita, E. robust, E. urophylla and Pinus sp.) that received four treatments (0, 24, 48 and 72 hours ofimmersion in water) that preceded the exhibition in the soil. The time ofpermanence ofthe stakes in the soil, varied in 30, 45 and 60 days after the installation. In thirty days of exhibition, Heterotermes longiceps (Snyder), consumed 18g of Pinus sp. Pinus sp. (40,7%) and E. urophylla (25,9%) were the alimentary preference in this period. In forty-five days of exhibition, Coptotermes havilandi Holmgren, consumed 50g ofPinus sp. (42,8%) and E. urophylla (22,8%) of the infested stakes. After sixty days, C. havilandi and Nasutitermes nordenskioeldi (Snyder) consumed 14g of Pinus sp. Pimis sp. (34,7%) and E. urophylla (30,4%) were the alimentary preference in this period. Regarding the treatment, the stakes that received treatment for 48 hours, obtained the largest infestation’s indications. In this experiment the density neither influenced the alimentary preference nor the consumption ofthe wood species. |
