The sharp rise in cases of anxiety, depression, and emotional distress in recent years, intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, has made it urgent to develop new ways of understanding how individuals seek to manage their emotions. In this context, emotional well-being (mHealth) apps have emerged as central tools in everyday life, shaping self-care practices and the ways subjects cope with crises. Given the reach of these apps and their growing impact, it becomes essential to investigate them from a socio-anthropological perspective that considers not only their technical functionalities but above all their subjective and symbolic effects. Recent reviews show that most research on mHealth is concentrated in psychology, psychiatry, computer science, and design, with an emphasis on clinical efficacy and market-oriented analyses. The lack of qualitative research grounded in users’ narratives led me to examine lived experience to understand how suffering and emotion management are re-signified through the Brazilian app with the highest number of downloads, according to the Play Store. In this thesis, I sought to understand how users perceive and use the app; I identified which objective and subjective transformations they attribute to it; and I analyzed how self-care practices are mediated by the device. I found that the app functions simultaneously as a tool for emotional support and as a technology of algorithmic subjectivation that shapes users’ ways of feeling, interpreting, and managing their emotions; reconfiguring memories; producing moralities of self-care; and reinforcing neoliberal logics of individual responsibilityen
