Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is highly prevalent in dogs and frequently leads to the development of mineral and bone metabolism disorders, compromising bone mineral density (BMD) and the animals' quality of life. In veterinary medicine, accessible and validated methods for the diagnosis and monitoring of CKD-associated mineral and bone disorder remain limited. This study evaluated the feasibility of digital optical radiography as a tool for BMD measurement in dogs with CKD, as well as its correlation with serum biomarkers of bone remodeling bone-specific alkaline phosphatase fraction and total alkaline phosphatase and other laboratory markers (urea, creatinine, phosphorus, total calcium, ionized calcium, total protein, and albumin). Digital radiographs of the mandible (alveolar region and body base), femur, and second lumbar vertebra were analyzed by digital optical densitometry, calibrated with an aluminum penetrometer (step wedge). Forty dogs were included in the study: eight clinically healthy (control group) and 32 with CKD, equally distributed across stages 1 to 4 according to the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS, 2023) guidelines.en
