| Abstract: | Ecological interactions are fundamental to the healthy functioning of an ecosystem, and the presence of an invasive plant can directly or indirectly impact the dynamics of the environment in which it is found. In Parque Nacional da Tijuca, Dieffenbachia seguine, commonly known as dumb-cane, although it doesn't occur naturally in the state of Rio de Janeiro, is found primarily in highly anthropized areas, forming clustered populations near the forest floor. Known by its ornamental use and also for its toxicity as a defense against herbivores, the plant is avoided by most animals in the area. However, after the reintroduction of the yellow-footed-tortoise Chelonoidis denticulatus, it was observed that these animals regularly fed on this plant, showing no signs of intoxication. This led to an investigation into this interaction, to understand how the pressure generated by herbivory and trampling by the tortoises might affect the population dynamics of this invasive plant, and whether they might act as regulators of it. To check the changes caused by C. denticulatus in the D. seguine population, three pairs of plots, each measuring 5 × 5 m, were established, one of each pair open to the animals (P01A, P02A, P03A), while the other was fenced off (P01F, P02F, P03F), were all plants longer than 10 centimeters were measured, and their number of leaves was counted. A random quadrant was selected in each plot, where the parameters of plants shorter than 10 centimeters were also measured. A second measurement was taken one year after the first, in order to determine the population’s vital rates: survival, growth, and fecundity. An analysis using Integrated Projection Models (IPMs) was then conducted to examine the population dynamics of this plant. The resulting IPMs indicated that the vital rates of D. seguine varied across areas and treatments, with survival and growth being size-dependent, while fecundity responded more strongly to environmental conditions. There was a population decline in P01 (λ = 0.38 in P01A and λ = 0.7 in P01F), a slight decline, closer to stability, in P02(λ = 0.94 in P02A and λ = 0.93 in P02F), and divergent results in P03 (λ = 0.9 in P03A and λ = 0.74 in P03F). An integrated analysis of the habitats revealed that the population had declined in both the open area and the fenced area (λ = 0.68 in the open area and λ = 0.75 in the fenced area). The open plots, subject to herbivory and trampling, exhibited lower recruitment and survival, while the fenced ones, where tortoises were absent, demonstrated a greater contribution from recruitment, especially P03F. This increase in recruitment, however, was not sufficient to promote population growth in the fenced plots. It is therefore possible to regard tortoises as key factors in shaping the population of the dumb-cane, alongside a variety of environmental demographic processes. |
