| pt_BR |

| dc.description.abstractOther | The small animal veterinary practice plays a crucial role in the diagnosis, treatment, control, and prevention of major diseases affecting dogs. Hemoparasitic infections are the most common parasitic diseases—regardless of sex, age, or breed—and are considered endemic in Rio de Janeiro. The first chapter aimed to analyze the laboratory and epidemiological aspects associated with hemoparasite prevalence. Animals presenting with thrombocytopenia, activated monocytes, and anemia were at the highest risk of hemoparasite infection; key associated factors included the animal's size and the presence of ticks. The second chapter aimed to analyze the seroprevalence of major hemoparasites across five small animal veterinary clinics using the SNAP 4Dx® Plus kit. Among 1,132 tests, the seroprevalence for at least one hemoparasite agent was 44.3%, with *Ehrlichia* spp. showing the highest prevalence (33.3%), followed by *Dirofilaria immitis* (7.1%), *Anaplasma* spp. (3.7%), and B. burgdorferi (0.3%). Regarding coinfections, the seroprevalence was 16.2%, with the most common combination being *Ehrlichia* spp. plus *Anaplasma* spp. (7.9%). The third chapter aimed to analyze the profile of dogs suspected of harboring hemoparasites (*Ehrlichia* spp., *Anaplasma* spp., and *Babesia* spp.) within a clinical practice setting. Samples were collected from 70 owned dogs, and associations were examined between positive and negative results from serological and molecular tests in relation to key clinical signs. All enrolled animals exhibited at least three clinical signs and laboratory abnormalities suggestive of hemoparasitic infection. Blood samples were analyzed via smear examination, serology, and qPCR. The prevalence rates were 34.3% and 37.1% for *Ehrlichia* spp., 11.4% and 11.4% for Anaplasma spp., and 11.6% and 8.6% for *Babesia* spp., based on serology and qPCR, respectively. Overall positivity for the three agents across the three techniques ranged from 1.4% to 65.7%. There was no significant difference between the serological and molecular biology tests. Animals presenting with epistaxis tested 100% positive for *Ehrlichia* spp. via serology and 80% via PCR. The combination of serology, PCR, and clinical and hematological signs was crucial for profiling the dogs, identifying a higher percentage of exposed and diseased animals compared to unexposed and healthy ones, thereby facilitating decision-making and the initiation of treatment. | en |
