| Abstract: | It is well known that the right to bury one’s loved ones is something that has existed in human societies since time immemorial. Due to its universal nature, this theme evokes compassion and, indeed, empathy among those who share the experience of burying their dead. It is with this scenario of mourning and the translatability of the Other in mind that this research emerges, whose objective is to produce an annotated translation from Spanish into Portuguese of the play La Cabeza en la Jaula (1963 [1987]), by David Cureses. The choice of the play stems from its connection to the Greek tragedy Antigone, staged by Sophocles in 442 BCE, enabling the convergence of two axes that form part of this study: theatrical translation and reception studies of the classics. In Cureses’ play, the conflict between Antigone and Creon is reinterpreted, bringing to the fore contemporary debates that engage the audience through a group of female characters and men from the Spanish army in the context of the Viceroyalty of New Granada, in the 19th century, specifically in the territory of present-day Colombia (1819), re-enacting the confrontation over the unburied body, as well as the clashes between the public and private spheres. In order to produce this translation, with a view to theatrical adaptation, we highlight the theoretical contributions of Antoine Berman (2007), Henri Meschonnic (2010), Tadeusz Kowzan (1978), Susan Bassnett (2003), Tereza Virgínia Ribeiro Barbosa, and Barbara Delli Castelli (2020). Since this is a text that is rooted in the classical text, reception studies drawing on the contributions of Charles Martindale (2013), Lorna Hardwick (2003), and Anastasia Bakogianni (2024) are of great importance for considering the relationships established between the world of Cureses and the Sophoclean setting. We are also interested in raising some questions arising from our own translation experience, such as the reflection on the role of the translator as a cultural mediator and the place of the theater translator as a creator of a voice that, in search of the “target stage,” must bring with it the voice of the Other, in its own language that is, the other language, the target language, and the language of the audience. |
